Crews commencing repairs to Rahoon Road surface

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

A section of the Rahoon Road in Galway City will remain closed this week in order to allow repairs to the road surface to be carried out.

A section of the road of approximately 30 metres, between Oakley Crescent and the Seamus Quirke Road junction, sustained significant damage as a result of a burst on a water main which occurred on Saturday morning.

Following repair of the burst, water supply was restored to impacted customers in the Rahoon and Salthill areas on Saturday evening. For safety reasons, the road will remain closed until surface repairs are complete.

Contractors working on behalf of Uisce Éireann have commenced repairs and it is expected that the road will be closed for a period of one week to allow for these works to be completed.

Diversions have been put in place for the period of the road closure, however local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Tony Kelly, Uisce Éireann Water Operations Manager, said the damage caused to the road will require significant repair works.

“This was a major burst on the main, the force of which caused the road surface to lift. In order to make the road safe for use, significant repairs will need to be carried out this week,” said Tony.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience that can be caused by a road closure such as this and we thank impacted residents, businesses and road-users for their patience while our crews work to repair the damage and reopen the road as quickly as possible.”
