Uisce Éireann is pleased to announce that a €23million upgrade of Clonmel’s drinking water infrastructure is now nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of a more secure and resilient water supply for homes and businesses across the town.
The Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade Project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s ongoing commitment to upgrading water services across the county.
The project includes an extensive upgrade of the Monroe Water Treatment Plant, a new pumping station at Rathronan, the construction of new water mains across Clonmel and network upgrades designed to strengthen security of supply and improve resilience across the wider network.
The project is now entering the final commissioning phase. In the coming weeks as part of the testing and commissioning the switchover of supply will begin and customers who are currently supplied by Poulavanogue Water Treatment Plant will be connected to the upgraded Monroe Water Treatment Plant.
This milestone will mark the culmination of years of planning and investment and will provide customers with the benefits of a modernised and more resilient water supply network. The upgraded infrastructure has been designed to improve reliability, enhance water quality and provide greater security of supply for customers for many years to come.
The investment also includes connecting all customers supplied by Monroe directly from the Giantsgrave Reservoir, further strengthening the network and helping to protect homes and businesses against future supply interruptions. It will also provide the capacity for operational crews to provide a more resilient and reliable supply of water for customers along the Cashel Road as the network can be adjusted to use water from Monroe to supplement supply if needed during periods of low water reserves at Glenary.
Commenting on the project, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Darragh Hannon said:
“This is an important milestone in our ongoing investment in water services across Tipperary. The works completed will deliver long-term benefits for customers by providing a safer, more reliable and more resilient water supply for the town.”
“We are delighted to be entering the final stages of the project. Once commissioning is complete, customers will benefit from a strengthened network, enhanced security of supply and infrastructure that is better equipped to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.”
The project has been developed to address long-term challenges associated with the existing water supply, including ageing infrastructure and water quality risks. The existing Poulavanogue supply has been included on the Environmental Protection Agency’s list of supplies at risk and has been subject to a number of Boil Water Notices in recent years.
In the coming days we will be writing directly to all customers currently supplied by Poulavanogue providing information about the completion of the project and what to expect as they switch over from Poulavanogue to Monroe.
The Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade Project is one of a number of significant investments being delivered by Uisce Éireann across South Tipperary. Alongside this project, works are progressing at Glenary Water Treatment Plant to ensure a more reliable water supply, while Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme has delivered the replacement of ageing water mains throughout Clonmel. Together, these investments are helping to improve water quality, reduce water lost to leakage and ensure communities have water supply they can rely on, now and into the future.
Uisce Éireann would like to thank customers, local representatives and stakeholders for their continued patience and support throughout the delivery of these important works.
Previous Updates
Uisce Éireann is making steady progress on its multi-million investment to strengthen and safeguard Clonmel’s water supply. Critical upgrade works at the Monroe Water Treatment Plant continue to progress while the construction of 15km of new watermains connecting the Monroe Water Treatment Plant with the Giant’s Grange reservoir was completed recently.
The project will deliver significant improvements to the town’s drinking-water infrastructure and ensure that homes and businesses in Clonmel and the surrounding areas benefit from a safer, more reliable, and resilient supply.
To facilitate upgrade works at the Monroe Water Treatment Plant there will be a planned outages which may impact customers in parts of Clonmel next week.
The planned interruption will impact customers on Fethard Road, Rathronan Road and surrounding areas. Customers may experience a disruption to supply on Tuesday, 07 July, from 11am to 4:30pm.
Uisce Éireann’s Diane Carroll said, “We understand the inconvenience caused by an interruption to supply. Every effort will be made to limit the impact of these essential works, and we would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and co-operation."
“Following the completion of the works, it can take two to three hours for normal water supply to return to customers as water refills the network, particularly for those properties on higher ground or at the end of the network.”
