Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Uisce Éireann wish to remind customers supplied by the Ardfinnan, Tipperary town, Golden to Cashel and Galtee Regional water supplies that the Boil Water Notices in place to protect public health remain in place.
Update on work to lift Boil Water Notice in place on Ardfinnan Regional Water Supply Scheme
The Boil Water Notice for all customers supplied by the Ardfinnan Regional Water Supply Scheme was put in place on 7 June to protect the health of almost 11,500 customers supplied by the Ardfinnan Public Water Supply served by Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Co Tipperary.
The notice will remain in place because of operational challenges at the water treatment plant. Efforts to lift it have been complicated by ongoing water shortages leading to nighttime restrictions driven by exceptionally high demand in the area, and the upgrade works currently underway at the treatment plant.
While these factors have presented additional challenges, the improvement works are a vital investment and, when complete, will help deliver a safe, secure and more resilient drinking water supply for customers in Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Cahir and the surrounding areas.
Update on work to lift Boil Water Notice in place in Tipperary Town
The Boil Water Notice affecting customers served by the Tipperary Town Water Supply also remains in place due to challenges with the quality of the raw water source following structural damage to one of the boreholes serving the Cordangan Water Treatment Plant. Uisce Éireann is progressing a long-term solution, with trial well drilling and hydrogeological assessments underway at a number of locations to identify a secure and reliable new raw water source, with works currently expected to be completed this autumn.
Update on work to lift Boil Water Notice for customers supplied by the Golden to Cashel Public Water Supply
Separately a Boil Water Notice put in place last weekend (25 July) also remains in place for customers supplied by the Golden to Cashel Public Water Supply following high levels of turbidity in the raw water at Springmount Water Treatment Plant. Operations teams are working to lift the boil water notice as quickly as possible.
Update on work to lift Boil Water Notice for customers supplied by the Galtee Regional Water Supply Scheme
Separately a Boil Water Notice put in place for customers supplied by the Galtee Regional Water Supply Scheme remains in place until further notice. The notice was put in place today due to low raw water levels at the Galtee Regional Water Treatment Plant which may affect the disinfection process at the plant.

Uisce Éireann's Pierce Faherty said:
"We acknowledge the inconvenience of a Boil Water Notice on each local community and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
"Protection of public health remains our top priority. We would like to assure those impacted that our crews are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to lift the notices.”
Uisce Éireann's drinking water standards, as set out under the EU Drinking Water Regulations, are stringent and include wide safety margins.
Where risks to water quality are identified through Uisce Éireann's enhanced testing and monitoring programme, the Health Service Executive (HSE) is consulted and Boil Water Notices are issued to protect public health. In all instances, immediate action is taken to address the cause of the issue and enable the notice to be lifted as quickly as it is safe to do so, in consultation with the HSE.
Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communication on Boil Water Notices. Customers are reminded that the water is safe to consume once boiled.
Water must be boiled for:
- Drinking
- Drinks made with water
- Preparation of salads and similar foods which are not cooked prior to eating
- Brushing teeth
- Making ice – discard all existing ice cubes and filtered water in fridge dispensers. Make ice using cooled boiled water
What actions should be taken:
- Use boiled and cooled water when preparing foods that will not be cooked, such as salads.
- Water can be used for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing toilets, but not for brushing teeth or gargling.
- Boil water by bringing it to a vigorous rolling boil and allow it to cool. Store in a clean, covered container in a refrigerator or cool place.
- Take care when bathing children to ensure they do not swallow the water.
- Infant formula can be prepared using tap water that has been boiled and cooled. Bottled water may also be used, in line with HSE guidance.
- Great care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds, particularly where children are present.
