Mains upgrades at Lough Atalia to improve supply for homes and businesses

Uisce Éireann customers in the Lough Atalia Road area of Galway city can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply, with works due to start later this month on a major programme of mains replacement in the area.

More than 1.8km of aging mains will be replaced as part of these works, with new, modern pipes installed in their place. These significant upgrades are being carried out in response to persistent bursts, leaks and other operational issues in the Lough Atalia Road area over recent months.

The upgrades will strengthen the local network and significantly reduce the risk of bursts going forward, providing a cleaner, more reliable supply of treated water for local homes and businesses.

Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, is aware that our customers in the areas surrounding Lough Atalia, Wellpark, College Road and the Old Dublin Road have been experiencing repeated outages and service disruptions of late.

"We have designed this programme of mains replacements to address these issues head-on," said Enda.

“By replacing more than 1.8km of mains in the area, we will bolster the local network to significantly reduce the risk of operational issues affecting homes and businesses.  

"As well as fewer bursts, the new pipes will provide a cleaner, safer supply of treated water to customers in the area, while helping us toward of goal of driving down rates of leakage on our networks.”

The works will take place along the R338 (the Moneenageisha Road and Dublin Road); the R339 (College Road); and the L-5048-0 (the Lough Atalia Road/Bothar na Long). The works will also include backyard service upgrades at College Road. In total, 1,821 metres of new mains will be laid as part of this programme of works.

A number of traffic management measures will be put into effect in order to ensure the safety of crews, road users and the general public while these works are underway. These measures will include road narrowing and nighttime lane closures and will be clearly signposted.

Works are due begin later this month. Farrans Construction is delivering this project on behalf of Uisce Éireann and works are expected to be complete in early 2027.
