From pilot to project: a proven solution to safeguard Dundalk's water supply

Uisce Éireann has broken ground on a €12 million upgrade to Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant which supplies drinking water to over 45,000 people across Co Louth. 

This project follows the success of a 2024 pilot study, which proved highly effective in removing naturally occurring manganese from the water supply. As part of this major upgrade, the new filtration technology will now be installed on a permanent basis.

The investment forms part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing commitment to improving water infrastructure across County Louth. Once complete, the upgrade will enhance drinking water quality, support continued compliance with drinking water regulations, and provide a more resilient and reliable water supply for homes and businesses throughout the region.

Uisce Éireann prioritised the upgrade following seasonal instances of water discolouration in recent years. 

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, Ian Walsh recognises the importance of this news, saying;
“We are delighted to see work begin on this important project for Dundalk and the wider Louth area. Building on the success of the pilot study, this investment will deliver lasting benefits for customers by improving water quality and strengthening the resilience of the local water supply.”

This project is being carried out by Veolia Water Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann and works are due to complete in early 2028.
