Uisce Éireann to tackle leaks and improve water supply in Gaoth Dobhair

Homes and businesses in Gaoth Dobhair are set to benefit from a significant Uisce Éireann investment in the local water network, with almost 900 metres of ageing water mains to be replaced to help reduce leakage, improve reliability and strengthen the area's water supply.

The project will involve the replacement of an old and damaged section of the Crothlí trunk main in Gaoth Dobhair. The works will take place along the L1593 from Mín Uí Bhaoill Church to Gillespie’s Quarry and will get underway in the coming days.

Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the project will also see new water service connections installed from the public water main to customers’ property boundaries and connected to existing supplies.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans and are expected to be completed by December 2026. Traffic management measures, including a road closure, will be required for the duration of the works. Crews will work to minimise disruption and Uisce Éireann would like to thank residents, businesses and road users in advance for their patience and cooperation. Local access will be maintained and diversion routes clearly signposted.

By replacing ageing water mains and service connections with modern infrastructure, we can help reduce bursts and outages, improve the performance of the network and ensure a more resilient water supply for homes and businesses in the area.”

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working every day to reduce leakage. Fixing leaks can be complex. With over 65,000 km of water mains buried underground across Ireland, enough to circle the earth one and a half times, many leaks are not visible. However, progress is being made, with leakage reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.
