Previous Updates

Water has now been restored to the vast majority of homes and businesses in north Dublin following this morning’s burst water main in Fairview, with repair works continuing to progress well.

The number of customers experiencing disruption has reduced from approximately 100,000 to less than 5,000. Most of those still affected are experiencing reduced pressure rather than a full loss of supply. Uisce Éireann expects that repairs will be complete by 10pm tonight; however, it may take a number of hours for normal pressure to return.

Crews have been working in challenging, water logged conditions since early this morning to isolate and repair the burst with final works now underway. Supply to customers was maintained by re routing water through the network to minimise disruption. Throughout the incident, Uisce Éireann also ensured continuity of service for critical customers, including hospitals, and contacted vulnerable customers to offer support while repairs progressed.

Stephen Burke, Regional Water Operations Manager, Uisce Éireann, said:
“We would like to thank teams from Dublin City Council, An Garda Síochána and Dublin Fire Service for their assistance with flood reduction and traffic management during the morning commute. The road, which was closed for several hours due to flooding, reopened at 11am. We would also like to sincerely thank customers for their ongoing patience as our crews work through difficult conditions to complete this complex repair and restore water.“

With normal supply expected to return this evening and tonight, Uisce Éireann would encourage households to check their internal plumbing systems for internal airlocks which can occasionally occur after this type of work. For advice on how to resolve these issues, visit our How to Check for and Clear Airlocks page.

As water returns, customers may experience some short-term discolouration. In the event of discolouration, running the cold kitchen tap for several minutes will usually restore the water to a clear colour. For more information visit our issues during or after an outage page.

If the issue persists, please contact our customer care team on 1800 278 278 or report it via our dedicated online form at our Report Discolouration page.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. Uisce Éireann is continuing to carry out urgent repairs to a major burst on a large water main at Edge’s Corner, Fairview Park in north Dublin.

The burst occurred in the early hours of this morning. Uisce Éireann crews attended the scene promptly, working alongside An Garda Síochána, Dublin Fire Brigade and expert teams from Dublin City Council. Uisce Éireann would like to thank the approximately 100 specialist personnel from the various agencies who assisted.

Approximately 100,000 customers are continuing to experience reduced water pressure and for some water outages will persist for a period. However our crews are re-routing water through the network to minimise the impact to household and businesses. The areas affected include Bayside, Collins Avenue, Howth Road, Raheny, Clontarf, Artane, Fairview, Kilbarrack, North Strand and Drumcondra. Uisce Éireann has maintained water to critical customers including hospitals and contacted vulnerable customers to see if we can support as works are ongoing.

Due to difficult, water logged ground conditions, it is expected that normal water supply will begin to be restored later this evening. Updates will continue to be posted here.

Flooding at the location, which led to road closures earlier today, has now receded. Fairview Road has reopened to traffic since 11am this morning.

Uisce Éireann is carrying out urgent repair works following a large burst on a major water main at Edge’s Corner, Fairview Park in north Dublin this morning resulting in water outages and low pressure.

Fairview Road is closed, and traffic management measures are in place, with Gardaí on site, while Dublin Fire Brigade is assisting with flooding in the area.

Areas currently experiencing water outages include:  Bayside, Collins Avenue, Howth Road, Raheny, Clontarf, Artane, Fairview, Kilbarrack, North Strand, Drumcondra. All other locations in north Dublin may be experiencing reduced water pressure.

An Uisce Éireann crew is on site and has isolated the burst. Repair works are ongoing and are expected to continue for some time.

Keith Conmy, Water Network Operations Manager, Uisce Éireann, said: “The repair is being carried out as quickly and as safely as possible. We understand the significant impact this incident is having on households experiencing water outages, as well as the considerable disruption being caused to traffic. This is a complex repair, and we appreciate the patience of customers and morning commuters as we work to restore normal water supply and reopen roads as quickly as possible.”

Once water is restored, customers may experience temporary discolouration as the network refills. If this occurs, Uisce Éireann recommends running the cold kitchen tap until the water runs clear.

Following repair works, it typically takes three to four hours for normal supply to return to all customers as the network refills, particularly for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.
