Works commencing to secure future water supply for Annamoe, Laragh and Glendalough

Uisce Éireann is commencing works on a project to strengthen and enhance the water supply network in Annamoe, Co Wicklow, helping to improve the resilience and reliability of the local water supply for years to come.

The Raheen Water Supply Rationalisation Project will involve the construction of a new water main between Roundwood Reservoir and Raheen Water Treatment Plant. The project will connect the Laragh-Annamoe water supply to the Vartry water supply zone, providing a more secure and resilient water supply for residents and businesses in the Annamoe, Laragh and Glendalough areas.

The investment will significantly improve the quality, reliability and long-term capacity of the local water supply, while also supporting future growth and development across the region. 

Speaking about the project, Uisce Éireann’s Barry Butler said: “We are delighted to be delivering this critical water supply project for the communities in Annamoe, Laragh and Glendalough. The existing drinking water infrastructure supplying the area is not sufficient to meet current demand. This project will not only improve water supply for our customers in the area, it will also facilitate future growth and development, including the delivery of new housing.” 

The project will see the construction of approximately 3.2km of new water main along the L-1059, L-1060 and R755 roads. In addition to improving the security and resilience of the local water supply, the works will help ensure the continued delivery of clean, safe drinking water to customers across the area.

Works are due to commence this week and are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd. is carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the project, traffic management measures will be required throughout the works. Phased road closures will be in place on sections of the L-1059 and L-1060 from August 2026 for approximately two months. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

To minimise disruption, work areas will be restricted to short sections of road at any one time. Traffic management arrangements may include temporary road closures and single lane Stop/Go systems.
