Ballaghaderreen Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

Uisce Éireann is commencing upgrading the Ballaghaderreen Wastewater Treatment Plant in Roscommon County Council to support development in the area and protect the local environment.

Uisce Éireann is progressing with works to upgrade the Ballaghaderreen Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP). This €3.8m investment will benefit homes and businesses in Co. Roscommon while also supporting compliance with the current European Regulatory Standards, protecting the receiving waters and local environment.

Conway Engineering will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The project is expected to be completed in Autumn 2027.

What will be involved as part of this project?

When completed this project will include the following works: 

Terminal Pump Station (TPS) 

  • New storm tank, providing an effective volume of 575m3 and storm return system.
  • Tipping bucket cleaning system to be installed in new storm tank. 
  • New 6mm 2D storm overflow screen installed in existing wet well. 
  • New static screen on the existing storm tank overflow weir to the water course. 
  • Generator connection to be installed in new Terminal Pump Station Control Panel.
  • Filling of existing tipping buckets to be automated. 
  • New fencing and site finishing works. 
  • Storm return system for existing storm cells to be automated  
  • New flow measurement on existing storm overflow pipe. 
  • Upgrade and install basic welfare facilities at existing PS control building. 
  • Install new control panel, housed in standalone kiosk to control all new equipment. 
  • Existing electrical equipment within the control building to be decommissioned and removed. 

Wastewater Treatment Plant 

  • Relocate the ferric dosing point to the aeration tank outlet. 
  • Upgrade of RAS/WAS pumping arrangements. 
  • Separate Clarifier scum removal system from RAS system 
  • Modification/upgrade to aeration system 
  • New control panel to control all new equipment, which will be housed in standalone kiosk. 
  • Upgraded existing SCADA system which will provide SCADA status and control over the WwTP and Terminal Pumping Station.
     

Project Benefits

The benefits of these upgrade works include: 

  • Improving the wastewater infrastructure to facilitate future demand – This project will ensure the required capacity of the wastewater infrastructure to support future development in the area.
  • Compliance with current European Regulatory Standards – This project will support compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater.
