Tullow Wastewater Network Upgrade
Uisce Éireann has completed works to deliver an upgrade of the wastewater network in Tullow, Co. Carlow.
Uisce Éireann has completed works on a major upgrade to the wastewater network in Tullow, County Carlow. This essential upgrade represents a €17 million investment and will benefit a population equivalent of up to 9,200.
The existing wastewater network was inadequate and did not consistently meet the standard required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) licence. This upgrade has modernised and improved performance of the wastewater network and enhanced water quality in the river Slaney, having a positive environmental impact.
EPS delivered the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This project followed on from a €10 million investment in the upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant in Tullow which was completed in 2023.
What was involved as part of this project?
- Upgrading the sewer network, one section of which involved a river crossing.
- Construction of a new terminal pump station and storm tank.
- A new storm water overflow installed.
- Decommissioning of the existing terminal pumping station.
- Decommissioning of the uncontrolled and unscreened storm water overflow.
- 1.8km of new pipeline installed.
What are the benefits of the completed project?
The upgraded infrastructure will:
- Modernise and enhance performance of the sewer network in Tullow, increasing capacity of the network, unlocking growth and development.
- Improve water quality in the river Slaney.
- Ensure compliance with the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
